Rainforest of the Sea


Sri Lanka has an abundance of coral reefs rich in biodiversity with over 180 hard coral species recorded. These colourful corals with their exotic tropical fish together with the many shipwrecks and their artificial reefs can be explored at several diving and snorkelling locations.

Sri Lanka’s coral reefs have long been attracting tourists from around the world. According to research stemming back to the 1980s, about two per cent of the country’s coastline contains nearshore fringing reefs.

Hikkaduwa has made it one of the most coveted locations for snorkelling in Sri Lanka. The National park contains a fringing coral reef of a high degree of biodiversity.
